Portugal is the sixth country in the world when it comes to Blue Flag beaches, while Praia de Mira is the only one that has had this flag for 35 years.

Portugal is the sixth country in the world with the most Blue Flag beaches. This is according to declarations made by the Assistant Secretary of State for Regional Development in Portugal, Carlos Miguel. Praia de Mira is the only beach that has had a Blue Flag for 35 years. “Of the 53 countries involved in the Blue Flag programme throughout the world, Portugal comes in sixth place when it comes to the most beaches with blue flags. This award means that the municipalities have had a great environmental awareness and have done a huge job all along the coast and also inland on the river banks,” said Assistant Secretary of State for Regional Development Carlos Miguel, when unveiling this year’s Blue Flag in Mira.
Praia de Mira’s new record
Praia de Mira, located south of Porto, has been confirmed in the 2021 list of Blue Flag beaches meaning that it is the current of record holder of the most years with a Blue Flag award. It is the only bathing area in the world to receive the Blue Flag for 35 consecutive years, highlighting the quality of beach.
“Whoever talks about the beach in Mira associates it with a quality beach, with very strict criteria. It is an inclusive beach which is accessible and of top quality, something which also projects us in terms of national and international tourism because that brand image is associated with it,” said the Mayor of Mira, Raul Almeida.
The municipality of Mira makes an investment of 90,000 euros in lifeguards during the bathing season, and also allocates 30,000 euros for cleaning and sanitation in Praia de Mira and Poço da Cruz beach, the mayor added.
